Last night was one for the books. ✨ Over 500 of us came together to celebrate 30 years of empowering youth through justice, education, and community. From unforgettable performances to honoring changemakers like President and CEO of @gap, Mark Breitbard @breitgap, the night was a powerful reminder: this anniversary isn’t just about our past - it’s a promise to the future.

And now for multiple generations we have worked every day for more equity, more equality, more opportunity, to ensure that all young people are supported and guided and educated and loved so that they can develop their own agency. Meet our Brotherhood Coordinator AND alum, Juan Tavarez! Juan’s journey with BroSis started back when it was just the Brotherhood. “I was at a point in my life when I was chasing the wrong things. When Jason and Khary came into my life, it was the right place at the right time. They showed me a different vision of what manhood could look like. You could be smart, you could be sensitive, you could stand up for yourself, you could speak with conviction, you could say what you mean and mean what you say, you could move differently about the world and be confident about it.”

A staff member since 2004, Juan’s current role is to ensure continuity on an administrative level within his team. He maintains relationships with school administrators and leaders such as college counselors, deans, and principals. He also helps facilitate the team’s sessions that take place outside of BroSis HQ. With the exception of this year, Juan has also been the lead facilitator of our International Study Program, a natural continuation of our work on leadership development, Pan-African and Latinx history, and global awareness.

“For me, it has always been about Khary and Jason’s sincerity and commitment, this inherent kind of love. They always saw a light in me. They saw something that I never saw in myself. I try to pay it forward in the work with my members. I try to motivate and inspire them.”
