Youth Mobilization Day!🌍✊🏽

After a month of training with @NYRenews and @TREEAge_Team, members of our Environmental Program took their voices to Albany! They met with three Assembly Members, including @AssemblymanAlTaylor, representative of the 71st assembly district of Upper Manhattan—who, after hearing from our members, immediately signed two environmental justice bills into action!

The first bill establishes a $500 million fund to provide upfront and technical support for public schools adopting solar, geothermal, and energy storage projects. The program will lower emissions, create union jobs, and reduce energy costs while ensuring underserved schools can access federal Inflation Reduction Act incentives.

The second bill establishes an economy-wide cap and invest program to support greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the state by setting a maximum allowable amount of emissions and regulating the sale or auction of allowances.

Shout out to @sixthstreetcc for inviting our young people to participate in their youth town hall last month, holding trainings in their space, and motivating our youth group as it was their first time in such a big climate justice space.

Meet our Liberation Program Coordinator AND alum, Abraham Velazquez, Jr.! A lover of hip-hop, rap, and writing, Abe joined a group of like-minded young people in 2001 in the former BroSis brownstone. Together, they formed what became known as the Lyrical Circle. At the time, BroSis did not have formal programming for the passionate group of writers, but staff opened their space to ensure they had a place to pursue their interests. “As members, we all looked up to our mentors as people we deeply admired and whose roles we wanted to step into one day. These leaders would come into our circle and draft poems or share raps with us - dropping little seeds that would leave us so inspired.”

6.5 years ago, Abe became a facilitator for the Liberation Program, which focuses on getting young people involved in and connected to youth work and community activism. In their current role as a coordinator, Abe still facilitates programming alongside co-facilitators, but their primary role is big-picture planning for the whole year, including retreats and college visits.

“It was really amazing as a young person, but also now as an adult, to walk into a space where there is so much Black and Brown history and art everywhere. It was like ‘wow this is not only a place that accepts us, and loves us, and is proud of where we are from, but also wants to hear what we have to say.’ It was everything that school was not. It was everything that the streets were not.”
