Tangela Mitchell

Tangie Mitchell is a writer, editor and educator from North Carolina. She earned a BA in Political Science from Spelman College and a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from Sarah Lawrence College. Her creative work centers personal and collective histories of the Black American South and has appeared in Poetry Wales, Obsidian: Literature and Arts in the African Diaspora, Berlin Lit, Mosaic, and more. A Best of the Net and Robert Siegel Prize-nominated poet, she holds writing fellowships from The Watering Hole, the UK-based Obsidian Foundation, and The Poetry Project. Her writing has also received support from the Cave Canem Foundation, The Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, The Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College, Sundress Academy of the Arts, and other arts institutions.
Tangie has over six years of experience as a youth worker, facilitator, and mentor. Through roles with The Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University, Fayetteville State University, The National Education Equity Lab, The National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame (NBCAHOF), and Harlem Children’s Zone, Tangie has sharpened her skills as a women-centered youth educator creating programming focused on cultural knowledge, global citizenship, and the arts.
Tangie has studied in the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil and is passionate about young people studying abroad as a means of self-cultivation.
