Director of College, Career & Wellness
Silvia A. Canales is a first-generation, Afro-Latina of Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage. As a committed counselor and cultural youth worker, passionate about addressing issues of race, sexism, mental health, and educational disparities; Silvia designs and implements programming addressing and challenging societal issues. Developing educational and contemplative curriculum, workshops, and events; she establishes brave spaces for under-represented youth, to empower themselves.
Silvia serves as the Director of College, Career, and Wellness at The Brotherhood/Sister Sol. Coordinating and managing support services for youth members ages 8-22, she creates opportunities for academic achievement, post-secondary exploration, planning, transition, and success as well as designs and leads support efforts promoting mental health awareness and wellness.
Silvia has received certification from the Belle and George Strell Executive Leadership Program at Hunter College’s Silberman’s School of Social Work, Harvard’s Summer Institute on College Admissions, Goddard Riverside’s Options Center for Educational and Career Choice in College Access Counseling as well as PASE and Baruch College Emerging Leaders Program.
She is a proud AmeriCorps National Service Alum and a first-generation college graduate. Graduating Cum Laude; she possesses a Bachelors in Sociology and Africana /Latino studies from Hunter College of The City University of New York and a Masters in Applied Psychology with a focus on Bilingual School Guidance and Counseling from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
