Bro Sis Youth Run Farmers Market
When: June 21, 2017
Time: 11 - 5p (Wednesdays)
Where: 143rd Amsterdam & Hamilton Place
The Brotherhood/Sister Sol’s Hamilton Heights Youth Market opened for business on Wednesday, June 21st, 2017. The market, which will be run by youth members of the Gaia Renaissance group of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, will be open to the public every Wednesday from June 21st through November 22nd, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the (Johnny Hartman Plaza on West 143rd Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Hamilton Place).
Our youth market, which also includes the launch of the Gaia’s Corner Magazine, will be a catalyst for creating consistent green food accessibility throughout the West Harlem community. Youth members will manage a weekly market through youth-led food stations using food from local farmers. The members will learn the growth patterns of the foods they sell, including the seasons when particular foods grow. They will also eventually perform weekly cooking classes and food demonstrations, which will offer participants healthy eating options. The magazine will be a voice for the youth, giving them a platform to raise issues about fresh food justice and advocacy, while sharing opportunities for fresh food access.
